Today I was reading about caul, when a child is born with a thin fleshy covering. The superstition is that such a child will be a genius, a leader, famous. One such child was born to two polish immigrants in the twenties, but died immediately. But he had a twin brother, who grew up to be Liberace.

ReplyDeleteSome people theorize that jd salinger was referencing this in the name Holden Caulfield. I have not heard of it being attributed to any sort of savant qualities, however. Instead, their thesis was that he desired a sense of protection, symbolized by the lingering artifact of the womb.
